Central Library,
West Bengal State University
The University Library of West Bengal State University started its journey 10 years back with a collection of 1800 books. It was housed at the university’s Guest House. About 8 years back, the collection was shifted to its present location at the academic building of the university. Over the years, the collection of the library has grown, and at now
the library has more than 28,000 books on almost all subjects. It has a great collection of rare books in the form of hardcopy as well as electronic copies. The library is equipped with more than 50 computers with high-speed internet facilities. Wi-Fi is also available now. With the help of the university librarian who has joined recently, the pace of the modernization of the library has been on an accelerated path.
Of various new initiatives that have now been taken, the organization of books through the application of modern library management software needs mention. The process of giving a huge facelift to the library’s look and feel has also started. The plan over the next year is to make the library a Center of Excellence where both students and teachers will get information through modern technologies as well as through reading of books. The library also has plans to organize many events on subjects like Women Empowerment, Career Enhancement, debates, JAM, quizzes, etc. Presently, the library has a footfall of more than 200 people per day. Most of the library visitors are young university students. They get book lending service, photocopying service, and Internet and printing facilities are also provided.
